Working Principle

Description

The SparkFun Qwiic Soil Moisture Sensor operates by measuring the resistivity of the soil. It features two large exposed pads that act as probes. The presence of water in the soil increases the conductivity between these pads, which in turn decreases the resistance and increases the SIG out signal.

Sensor Types

Soil moisture sensor based on soil resistivity measurement

Dos And Donts

Donts

  • Avoid Continuous Exposure To Water: Do not leave the sensor continuously exposed to wet conditions as it may shorten the lifespan of the sensor.

Dos

  • Connect Vcc And Gnd Properly: Ensure that the VCC and GND pins are correctly connected to your Arduino-based device or compatible development board to get the sensor working.,
  • Consider Environmental Factors: Be aware of the environmental conditions, as moisture sensors can have a limited lifespan when exposed to damp environments.
Limits

Lifespan

  • Description: The sensor can have a limited lifespan when exposed continuously to damp environments. The PCB is finished in gold (ENIG, or Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold) to help counteract this issue.
How To Connect

Steps

  • Description: To connect the SparkFun Qwiic Soil Moisture Sensor, simply attach the VCC and GND pins to your Arduino-based device or compatible development board. The sensor will output a SIG based on the soil moisture level.
Dimensions

Description

The shipping dimensions of the SparkFun Qwiic Soil Moisture Sensor are 7 × 4 × 1 cm, and it has a shipping weight of 0.005 kg.
